Trauma and stress-related disorders are a group of behavioural and emotional problems that may result from traumatic and stressful experiences.
These experiences can include exposure to physical or emotional violence or pain, including family conflict, abuse, or neglect. Stressors such as physical or emotional neglect can also cause problems when they are ongoing or not addressed.
Common trauma and stressor-related disorders
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Individuals with PTSD may show symptoms such as flashbacks or memories of a traumatic event and persistent, frightening thoughts. Other symptoms may include sleep problems, avoidance of certain places or situations, headaches, stomach pains and depression.
Acute stress disorder (ASD): ASD symptoms are similar to PTSD, but manifest within the first month after exposure to trauma. Early treatment and appropriate support can decrease the risk of ASD developing into PTSD.
Adjustment disorders: This disorder is characterised by unhealthy reactions to stressful events or changes in a person's life. These reactions can be behavioural, such as misconduct or misbehaving, or emotional, such as a depressed mood or nervousness.

In general, Dr Khabisi uses psychotherapy to help individuals come to terms with trauma. During therapy sessions, you learn about your condition, your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Psychotherapy enables you to take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills.
In some cases, medications can also be useful in the treatment of these disorders. Trauma and stress-related disorders may be treated with some form of antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications.
