Dr Khabisi has a special interest in adolescent psychiatry. He works with children and families through this transitional stage of physical and psychological development.
Adolescent psychiatry is primarily concerned with the study and treatment of behavioural disorders and emotional problems that affect young people. Emotional maladjustments of children frequently are characterised by anxiety reactions. These may include habit disorders and issues relating to their bodies, identities, sexuality, self-esteem, strong emotions, future goals, as well as relationships with others.
School experiences can also create personality problems. Many children exhibit behaviour and learning disturbances because they are intellectually, emotionally, temperamentally, or unable to learn. Children with perceptual difficulties, for instance, may fail to learn to read and develop reading skills appropriate to their age level. As a consequence, they may become frustrated and anxious over their failure to meet the standards of their classmates.
The goal of adolescent psychiatry
The aim of psychiatry is to guide children through difficulties they may be going through. Talk therapy is generally used with adolescents, and can play a crucial role in promoting your child’s adjustment and development.
Adolescent psychiatry sessions: What to expect
The first few sessions usually focus on establishing rapport (establishing a bond of mutual understanding and trust) with the adolescents. Next, Dr Khabisi uses different techniques to try and understand the situation from the child’s perspective and then therapy methods are employed to help them deal with the difficult situation.
The number of sessions required varies with each case. Immediate, short-term or crisis interventions are available as well as longer-term ongoing therapy for more complex issues. Dr Khabisi is able to assist with developmental and adjustment problems including social, psychological, emotional, behavioural, academic and cognitive challenges. Medication may occasionally be used, depending on the severity of the condition.
If your child is experiencing emotional, behavioural difficulties or learning difficulties, then feel free to contact Dr Khabisi. His psychiatry services will provide your child with the opportunity to explore and discuss their problems, concerns, relationships, behaviours, and emotions within a safe and supportive environment.
