Substance abuse is a pattern of harmful use of a substance used to alter one's mood. These substances can include alcohol and other drugs (illegal or not) even some substances that are not drugs at all. The individual uses the substance too much, or in a way that is not recommended.
Signs of substance abuse
People with addictive disorders may experience symptoms differently. Some typical signs of addictive disorders may include:
- Getting intoxicated on alcohol or high on drugs on a regular basis
- Lying about how much they are drinking or using
- Avoiding family and friends
- Giving up activities they used to enjoy
- Talking a lot about using drugs or alcohol
- Pressuring others to use or drink
- Getting into trouble at work or school
- Pupils larger/smaller than usual
- Bloodshot eyes
- Changes in sleep patterns or appetite
- Sudden weight loss or weight gain
- Deterioration of physical appearance
- Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing
- Tremors, slurred speech, or impaired coordination
Substance-related Psychiatric Illnesses
Substance abuse disorders and psychiatric illnesses sometimes occur together. Substance abuse and mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety are closely linked, although one doesn’t necessarily directly cause the other. Abusing substances such as methamphetamine and marijuana can cause prolonged psychotic reactions, while alcohol can make depression and anxiety symptoms worse.
Treatment for substance abuse
The first step towards recovery is for the individual to acknowledge that substance use has become a problem in their life and that they need help. For most people, treatment will last for the rest of their life. They will need to avoid the substance on a life-long basis- which can be quite difficult.
Dr Khabisi uses therapy as a treatment technique to help individuals overcome their addiction. Sessions take place on a one-on-one, group, or family basis, depending on the needs of the individual. Therapy is usually intensive at the start of treatment with the number of sessions gradually reducing over time, as symptoms improve.
